A New Year resolutions is the WRONG approach to change your life!!! Even, it’s the wrong thing to do!!! Instead you must change consciously your daily practices!!!Let me explain why?
Resolution comes from the root word, resolve. To be resolved. To be determined, almost to make a pledge, or an oath, comes from making a decision. Making a decision is a result- to decide.
Indeed decide comes has root word “cider” (to put to death any other option), which is helpful because it means we made up our mind; But making up your mind is just the first step in making a change… Will power is not enough to make CONSTANT change. Why? For the most part, it’s because it’s coming from our conscious mind- the rational mind.
Unfortunately or fortunately, Habits are rules by our subconscious mind, which is led in the the habit brain and that’s there we need to make changes.
There are enough information in previous podcast and blog that offers solutions in changing habits that I had discussed. To Illustrate my perspectives, wanted to share this poem that I stumble across upon; I wish I could hug the author of it.
I am your constant companion.
I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden.
I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.
I am completely at your command.
Half of the things you do you might as well turn over to me and I will do them – quickly and correctly.
I am easily managed – you must be firm with me.
Show me exactly how you want something done
and after a few lessons, I will do it automatically.
I am the servant of great people, and alas, of all failures as well.
Those who are great, I have made great.
Those who are failures, I have made failures.
I am not a machine though
I work with the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a person.
You may run me for profit or run me for ruin -it makes no difference to me.
Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet.
Be easy with me and I will destroy you.
Who am I? I am Habit.
Yes, our habits reside in our subconscious mind. This is what we need to pay attention to. NOT A one day resolution.
Let me further illustrate this by this quote as well. Well known.
“Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions;
watch your actions, they become habits; watch your habits, they become character;
watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”
As you can see the point I’m trying to make is that a New Year resolution is just a beginning, but let not that fool ourselves that it will be it.
In fact how many people have weight loss/muscle gain resolution?
By Mid-February unfortunately, the parking lot in gym club is empty again.
The relevant point, I’m sharing above and highlighting is that we need to act first on our thoughts and beliefs. Because our thoughts becomes our character which determine our destiny.
So I’m going to suggest that ON TOP of any resolutions you’ve made; if you want that resolution to stick and be permanent. I suggest to go back to analyze your core beliefs in that area.
If it’s health, weight; ask yourself what are my belief in eating healthy, in body exercises etc…
As you unveil these core beliefs and replace them, you’ll be able to permanently be resolved.
In fact, what separate Top Performers to average and mediocre performers is one and only thing: The best ones have a set of CONSTANT BEST PRACTICES!!! Daily practices in the area of their excellence, from that they are basically creating good habits.
Simply put it that way-As Aristotle said-“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
